WE SAY

Continuing with our artists you need to catch at the Great Escape festival this week is one of our Ones To Watch 2025 artists: Sunday (1994). Formed around the writing duo and band members Paige Turner from California and Lee Newell from Slough (UK) and joined by drummer ‘Puma’, Sunday (1994) craft a wistful, cinematic brand of indie that channels the bittersweet nostalgia of ’90s romantic cinema with the dreamy haze of Mazzy Star, the melancholy pull of The Cure, and the delicate shimmer of The Sundays. Their critically acclaimed self-titled debut EP, released last year, earned praise from NME, Rolling Stone UK, Dork, The Line of Best Fit, Notion, DIY, The Sunday Times, and more. Last Friday, they followed it up with their second EP, ‘Devotion’, featuring the singles ‘Rain’, ‘Doomsday’, and this stunning new track that continues to show that they are brilliant purveyors of intoxicating indie soundscapes. The band has also received major radio support from BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 6 Music, Travis Mills’ Apple Music show, and NME Radio, as well as playlist love from both Spotify and Apple Music. Tonight (14 May), they play a sold-out Village Underground before playing two shows at The Great Escape – Thursday (7.15pm @TGE Beach – The Deep End) and Friday (2.30pm @Komedia Basement). They’ll then perform an in-store at Kingston’s Banquet Records on Sunday, followed by appearances at Live at Leeds and Neighbourhood Weekender in Manchester the following weekend. With dreamy textures, tongue-in-cheek yet confessional lyrics, and a sound steeped in romanticism, Sunday (1994) are poised to be one of the festival’s standout acts.
