Angel Haze
Echelon (It’s My Way)

Island Records

WE SAY

Incredible to think, since through her mixtapes, freestyles and covers she already feels like a fixture online and on the radio, that this is Angel Haze's first single proper, from forthcoming debut album Dirty Gold due out next year. Hailed a Hottest Record in the World by Radio 1's Zane Lowe, Echelon (It’s My Way) sounds like nothing else around right now. Lyrically and rhythmically inventive, Angel's spitting braggadocio contrasts with spacey and expansive production from Markus Dravs, better known for his work with Arcade Fire, Coldplay and Bjork than hip-hop's most fearless new names. That might seem like an odd partnership, but boy does it work: Echelon leaps out of the radio, bearing all the hallmarks of a future recurrent for Urban and CHR, à la 212 by Azealia Banks (not that either of them will likely appreciate the comparison). Angel Haze is just back from playing the BBC 1Xtra stage at Reading & Leeds, with a Bestival appearance and a sold-out Birthdays headline show still to come.

London gig: Birthdays, September 5
