It's been over two and a half years since we last featured the stunning vocals of British/Greek singer-songwriter Eleni Drake on RotD. Her self-released singles 'Guts' and 'Rookie' revealed a confident and gifted artist who cultivated a devoted fanbase and accumulated over 40m streams entirely independently. Last Friday saw Eleni venture into more expansive sonic territory with 'Chuck', her debut album for MNRK, crafted alongside co-producer Frank Colucci (Ashnikko, Ethel Cain). Lead single 'Ripples' is a masterclass in emotional build and restraint. Opening with delicate guitar and vocal intimacy, the track blossoms into a sweeping crescendo of strings and country-inflected melodies that showcase Eleni's ability to marry vulnerability with cinematic scope. The single has already garnered Spotify support, adding to an impressive roster of previous champions, including BBC Radio 1, 6 Music, The Line of Best Fit, Clash, Wonderland, and the Independent. With influences spanning Mazzy Star's hazy melancholia to Adrienne Lenker's stark honesty, Eleni has crafted something that feels both classic and strikingly fresh.
