Smalltown Boy
We say
Dublin singer-songwriter Shobsy closes his debut EP 'Own The Night' (out today) with a breathtaking reinterpretation of Bronski Beat’s queer anthem 'Smalltown Boy'. First performed on The Late Late Show, where it went viral with over 100k views in just 12 hours, Shobsy’s stripped-back version pairs his soaring, emotive vocals with delicate piano, turning the 1980s classic into a moving reflection on identity, resilience and self-acceptance. The release caps off a breakthrough year that’s seen Shobsy sign with SO Recordings and Pangea International Music Publishing (in partnership with Sony Music Publishing), sell out major Irish venues, perform as a special guest at the International Music Awards gala dinner in Los Angeles and is currently supporting My Baby on tour. His recent single, 'Dance Or Cry', hit No.4 on the Irish Radio Breakers Chart, while previous singles, including the RotD-featured 'Vanity' and 'Entertainment', have drawn acclaim from Earmilk, PopMatters, Hot Press, Nialler9, Today FM, RTE 1 and 2fm. Blending the glamour of Bowie and the soul of George Michael with his own heartfelt storytelling, Shobsy's 'Smalltown Boy' isn't just a cover – it's a personal reckoning, and it's utterly compelling.
