We say

After two decades commanding stages as one half of Brighton alt-rock duo Blood Red Shoes, Laura-Mary Carter continues to impress with her solo work – and the evolution is striking. Where her band career pulsed with feral intensity, here she trades raw electricity for something more nuanced, atmospheric and cinematic. Her new single 'Four Letter Words' – described by Carter as having “this French retro feel with a touch of British monotone” – lands somewhere between melancholy indie, British noir and Americana. Layered synths and keys provide a hazy backdrop, while her vocal delivery radiates restraint and quiet power. The result is nothing short of spellbinding. Taken from her debut solo album 'Bye Bye Jackie' (out last Friday), the track is part of a sublime collection showing depth, intimacy and fragility. Previous single 'June Gloom' (featuring Lee Kiernan of IDLES) picked up support from The Line of Best Fit, Dork and DIY, as well as spins from John Kennedy at Radio X and Selector Radio UK. If you’ve yet to dive into her solo material, 'Four Letter Words' is the perfect entry point – a track that deserves heavy rotation across 6 Music, Virgin Radio, Radio X and beyond. Carter’s next chapter takes her on the road with Queens of the Stone Age this autumn, including a prestigious Royal Albert Hall date on 29 October. With 'Bye Bye Jackie', Laura-Mary Carter proves she’s not just stepping out of her band’s shadow – she’s redefining her voice two decades into a storied career.
