Shine
We say
Released last week, 'Shine' is the latest single from Madeleine Rose Witney. Dreamy on the surface yet laced with unease, the track paints the image of a woman walking home alone, vulnerable yet defiant, watched over by an imagined celestial chorus. Taken from her forthcoming EP, the song blends late-night jazz and swing with classic singer-songwriter tones to create a deceptively dreamy nocturnal ode. Its lilting melody sits against stark lyrical truths (“can this fist full of keys save you on this balmy eve”), making 'Shine' a quietly powerful hymn to resilience – both haunting and empowering. Drawing comparisons to Charlotte Gainsbourg, Weyes Blood and Aldous Harding, Witney weaves retro glamour and noirish storytelling into a sound that feels at once classic and contemporary. A self-styled torch singer for the modern age, she delivers here a single that is as evocative as it is timeless. Watch the video here. Fresh off sold-out shows, including last night's Servant Jazz Quarters gig, she next headlines The Troubadour on 30 September. If this is modern torch singing, we're here for it.
