The Arsonist

We say
‘The Arsonist’ is a slow-burning, cinematic art-rock statement from London-based group Cherry i. Produced by Ali Chant (PJ Harvey, Youth Lagoon, Soccer Mommy), it’s a mesmerising blend of detuned guitars, submerged percussion and an atmosphere that drifts between The Smile’s taut surrealism, King Krule’s shadowy melancholy and Portishead’s brooding intensity. Lyrically, the track reframes modern conflict through a mythic, dreamlike lens, informed by the experiences of the band’s Ukrainian members. Frontwoman Nikol explains: “I wanted to take a fairy tale or Greek myth-style approach to something too difficult to look at head-on... It became a way to process the trauma of war, displacement and loss, by creating distance without losing the truth". The result is a song that feels both defiant and delicate – a striking debut deserving of support across 6 Music, specialist spins on Radio 1, and placement on key alternative playlists at DSPs. Already a fixture on London’s underground circuit with regular shows at The Windmill and The George Tavern, Cherry i will headline the Sebright Arms this Sunday (31 August) – one to catch.
