We’re seriously impressed with this expansive and cinematic release from 21 year old artist Matt Ryder. 'Animal’ is a gorgeously suspenseful slice of alternative electronic music, rich in atmosphere and steeped in nostalgia. It evokes the late ’90s and early ’00s with subtle nods to ’80s new wave, all filtered through a sharp, contemporary lens. Imagine Depeche Mode colliding with Moby’s ‘Extreme Ways’/Bourne Identity era, and you’ll get a sense of the lush sonic landscapes and moody intensity at play. The track is the first single from Ryder’s upcoming EP, a project he describes as charting his “journey through darkness toward healing”. Released last Friday (6 June), the track has already made an impact, landing on Apple Music’s New Music Electronic, Deezer UK’s Brand New and SoundCloud Fresh Pressed Friday playlists, as well as featuring on BBC Introducing Sounds Mix and BBC Introducing’s discovery platform Orbit. A self-producing writer and performer whose work draws influence from fashion, photography, politics, and contemporary culture, Ryder is carving out a distinctive space in the electronic scene. With two EPs and a string of collaborations on the horizon, Matt Ryder is a rising talent to keep on your radar.
