Released today, Fresh Product, is the sublime new single from rising Camden rapper AWATE’s forthcoming debut album, Happiness. Mentored by Yasiin Bey (Mos Def), the Eritrea-born MC weaves witty lyrics of his come-up story with hazy, old-school hip-hop vibes and ‘60s tinged psychedelic melodies in this absolute gem. His previous singles have garnered tastemaker support from Charlie Sloth (Radio 1 & 1Xtra), DJ Semtex (1Xtra), Matt Wilkinson (Beats 1), DJ MK and Shortee Blitz (KISS), plus Complex, Noisey, The Line of Best Fit, Afropunk and Huck have all sung his praise. AWATE will be releasing his album on his own label, Quite Defiant Records, having gained support from the MOBO Trust’s Help Musicians fund. After touring with Lowkey across the UK last year, and performing at TGE’s First Fifty showcase gig in November, his next performance will be at the Roundhouse on 22 February for his album launch night. A talented wordsmith who deserves your attention now.
