Formed in late 2008, Queens band Freelance Whales were a hit at CMJ late last year, followed by busy SXSW and some glowing reviews for their debut album Weathervanes. The band and the first single, Generator 2nd Floor, were received warmly by 6Music and the adorable Hannah is currently on their C-list. Weathervanes was 6Music's Album of the Day this week too. It's a gem of a record - the meeting of synth, glockenspiel and harmonium with Judah Dadone's fragile vocals has led to the Sufjan Stevens-meets-Postal Service comparisons. Freelance Whales play Reading & Leeds this month and the End of the Road festival in September. We'd have to side with Dan Martin of NME, who called it 'one of the loveliest indie records of the year'.
