South London's Sound Lounge hosts 'Tapestry Rewoven' 50th anniversary livestream

KT Tunstall leads distinguished cast of British artists including Robert Vincent, Jo Harman, Charlie Dore, Danni Nicholls and Hannah White To Recreate 1971 Classic

Independent South London roots music venue and community hub the Sound Lounge is to stage a 50th anniversary recreation of Carole King's quadruple Grammy-winning landmark album Tapestry.

Among those contributing new, exclusive interpretations to Tapestry Rewoven are BRIT and Ivor Novello Award-winning KT Tunstall, double ASCAP Award-winner Charlie Dore and recent two-time UK Americana Award recipient Robert Vincent. He will be accompanied by pianist-vocalist Anna Corcoran, herself victorious at January's AMAs as UK Instrumentalist of the Year.

The fundraising livestream, devised and curated by Sound Lounge patron and music journalist Paul Sexton, will be presented live from the venue, observing lockdown restrictions, on Tuesday, February 23 from 7.30pm. Digital tickets, at £5, can be purchased at www.thesoundlounge.org.uk.

Sexton and Sound Lounge co-owner Hannah White will host, with White (a recent AMA UK British Album of the Year nominee) also performing, as are fellow Tapestry devotees and British roots/Americana notables Danni Nicholls, Lauren Housley and Ned Roberts. Also starring are widely-respected songwriter-vocalists Jo Harman, Mollie Marriott and Steve Balsamo, who will perform with Rob Reed, his colleague in the acclaimed progressive band ChimpanA.

The livestream will raise funds for the Sound Lounge, a much-respected feature of London's grassroots live music scene in recent years. In 2020, during fundraising for its new site in Sutton, it was named among GQ magazine's “best small music venues” in the UK, and Time Out described it as “Good news for London's music scene...hope for London music fans.”

Defying all odds amid the financial perils of lockdown, the new Sound Lounge opened in December 2020 for initial restricted events, which will resume in full at the earliest opportunity. It's on track to become the UK’s first carbon neutral grassroots venue and, alongside myriad community-driven initiatives, also has its own record store, a branch of the highly popular Union Music, based in Lewes, East Sussex.

In the meantime, Sexton says of Tapestry Rewoven: “The response from artists about getting involved in the livestream has been incredibly enthusiastic. That's a measure of what a genuine classic this album is, and to have such great musicians remaking it is a really exciting prospect.” Tunstall recently told BBC Radio 4's Today programme of Tapestry: “I often get asked what advice what you give to young up-and-coming writers, and one of the top three pieces of advice I would give them is to listen to this record.”
