Sam Fender’s Hypersonic Missiles named as Annie Mac's Hottest Record of the Year 2019

Sam Fender’s Hypersonic Missiles has been crowned as Annie Mac’s Hottest Record of the Year 2019, announced tonight in a special extended edition of BBC Radio 1’s Future Sounds.

AJ Tracey, Foals, Clairo and Charli XCX & Christine and the Queens missed out on the top spot but made it to the coveted top five.

Sam was named on the longlist for BBC Music’s Sound Of 2018 and joined Radio 1’s Brit List later that year. His winning track Hypersonic Missiles from his debut album of the same name was released in March 2019 and spent 11 weeks in the UK’s Official Charts – a worthy winner!

Annie Mac says: “Sam Fender is such a deserved winner of this accolade. His rise has been meteoric. Something about his art touches people and connects them in a way that doesn’t come around that often. His voice is unique in its range and he’s not afraid to sing about the scary stuff in life. It feels really special for our show to be able to celebrate his year with this award. I'm thrilled the Radio 1 listeners voted Hypersonic Missiles their Hottest Record of the Year and I’m so excited for Sam's future.”

Listeners were able to vote for their favourite tracks via the Radio 1 website and via the Radio 1 twitter account.

The top five Hottest Records of the Year 2019 are:

  1. Sam Fender - Hypersonic Missiles
  2. AJ Tracey - Ladbroke Grove
  3. Charli XCX & Christine and the Queens - Gone
  4. Foals - The Runner
  5. Clairo - Bags

Other tracks longlisted for Hottest Record of the Year were (in alphabetical order):

  • Aitch Ft. ZieZie – Buss Down

  • Bon Iver – Hey, Ma

Annie Mac continues: “The Hottest Record of the Year show is always a really interesting look back at the best music of the year, it’s a chance to highlight any trends, and celebrate the state of play when it comes to our music landscape and the culture around it. It’s 20 songs whittled down from nearly 200 by me and the team and then our listeners vote on their favourite. So it’s a fan vote and a critical vote and, for the artist in question, an authentic stamp of approval for their art.”

Every Monday to Friday at 7.30pm, Annie Mac unveils her Hottest Record in the World on Radio 1’s Future Sounds and Radio 1’s Dance Party in a slot known for breaking some of the most exciting new music on the planet.

Jumpsuit by Twenty One Pilots was crowned Hottest Record of the Year in 2018, beating the likes of The 1975, Florence + The Machine, and Drake to the top spot.
