30 May 2022 - Press releaseMusic Industry veteran Robin Millar , the renowned British music producer, entrepreneur and current Chairman of Chrysalis Records Ltd & Blue Raincoat Music - who handle the careers of Cigarettes After Sex and Phoebe Bridgers and the music recordings of Ultravox, Sinead O’Connor, The Specials, Debbie Harry and Billy Idol's Generation X among many others - has announced plans for a 70th birthday party, which will also celebrate the 70th anniversary of disability equality charity Scope, of which he is Chairman.
Robin, who was appointed a CBE in the 2010 Queens Birthday Honours List, has owned and run businesses centred on the music industry for over 30 years, including the legendary Power Plant, Maison Rouge and Whitfield Street Studios. Among the high profile artists Robin has worked with are Sade, Randy Crawford, Everything But The Girl, Fine Young Cannibals, Big Country, Eric Clapton, Sting, The Grateful Dead and many others. He also produced the Atlanta Olympic Games Opening Ceremony in 1996.
Robin, who has been blind since the age of 16, became Chairman of Scope in 2021, a charity that provides practical advice and emotional support whenever disabled people need them most. It does this through its Scope helpline, online community, a range of employment and family services, community engagement programmes, partnerships and more, with the overarching aim of achieving everyday equality for disabled people.
The planned party will take place on June 2nd at the 606 Club in London and will see 100 invited guests enjoy entertainment from The Stacey Brothers ft. Andy Caine, featuring musicians who have worked with the likes of Noel Gallagher, Sheryl Crow and King Crimson among others, playing a set comprised of classic songs . This will be followed by a blues set featuring Millar himself (who has released three acclaimed albums as a solo artist) on guitar.
The whole event will be live streamed and repeated with over 5000 Scope volunteers and colleagues able to watch for free, with others encouraged to donate to a dedicated JustGiving page full details of which can be found below.
Robin, who has transformed the lives of thousands through projects in Europe, Africa and Asia with UNHCR, Leonard Cheshire International and UNICEF, rode 407 virtual miles for Scope in 2021, a feat that raised over £60,000 in donations.
Recently diagnosed with cancer, he is planning to go into isolation the day after the party in preparation for a major operation and said, “Any excuse for a party, especially one for such a great cause! Since I have been Chairman of Scope, we have done some amazing work raising funds and awareness, but the need is still there. I hope we can exceed the amount we accumulated from so many generous donations last year. I have spent my life in the music business and it has been incredibly good to me, so I’m hoping the industry will step up and help support this vital work. If anyone can make a donation to Scope right now to help over 14 million disabled people and their families, I would be very grateful and will take great strength from it as I go into my personal wilderness of cancer. This fundraising activity is part of our ambition to halve the employment gap between disabled people and the rest of the population and to send a clear message to businesses that those who welcome and include disabled people thrive.”
