New programme brings together music educators to discuss careers and trends in the music business

The Pathways Into Music Foundation is launching a new professional development programme to help music educators across the UK better support young people who want to pursue a career in music - whether as music-makers or in an industry role.

Enabled by the support of Arts Council England, 'Understanding The Pathways Into Music' consists of a two-day in-person event in Derby in April plus three accompanying webinars.

Through a mixture of lectures, discussions and Q&A sessions, the programme will map music education, the music industry and the many different kinds of music careers, and explain what knowledge and information young people need to get started.

Pathways Into Music Foundation Director Phil Nelson says: "Anyone pursuing a career as a musician or artist today needs to get things started DIY before the music industry gets involved. Music educators are best positioned to provide young people with the knowledge and information they need during that DIY Phase. Through this programme we will ensure educators have that knowledge and information themselves and are able to sign-post other support".

"We will also be putting the spotlight on careers in the music industry itself. Many young people are unaware of the many different jobs and career routes in the industry. Again, educators are best positioned to provide that knowledge, and we want to help them perform that task".

The programme will involve music teachers, instrument tutors, and FE and HE lecturers, plus people working for music education hubs and talent development organisations. Participation is free - info on how to apply is here: https://pathwaysintomusic.com/educatorprogramme-spring2024

'Understanding The Pathways Into Music' takes place at Derby Conference Centre on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 April, with webinars before and after the in-person event.
