Leicester’s Athena is opening its calendar to live music in 2023

Leicester’s Athena is opening its calendar to live music in 2023, making it the largest capacity music venue in the East Midlands. Having previously hosted the likes of Stevie Wonder and Diana Ross, to Olly Murs, S Club 7 and Leicester’s own Kasabian, this iconic art-deco venue is a hidden gem in the live music and gig world.

Originally built in 1936 as an Odeon Cinema, this Grade II listed building boasts a tiered 1,200 standing capacity ground floor and a 700 standing capacity balcony, 3 bars and a grand foyer, all retaining their original art-deco features.

Bands, artists, performers, comedians and the likewise who attract crowds upwards of 450 are invited to perform at Athena, as they urge touring musicians to come to a city often missed out on UK tours.

Athena also hosts a myriad of events, from corporate dinners for huge clients such as Krispy Kreme, HSBC, Turtle Bay and the NHS, sporting events like boxing and body building, and conferences, awards ceremonies and more. It is a venue with a huge reputation and musical history, and this is an exciting step for Leicester’s music scene.

Leicester is host to many exciting music venues, from The Musician, The SoundHouse, The Shed, 2Funky Music Café, The Donkey, and the O2 academy Leicester. However, the biggest of these has a capacity of 1400, and so Athena’s reintroduction into the world of live music takes Leicester’s biggest venue capacity up to 2,000, hopefully enticing more musicians to visit the city.
