Latin American creators and industry leaders rally behind JusticIA campaign

Over 30 organisations call on policymakers to uphold, protect and preserve the intellectual property rights of authors, artists, producers and publishers

A coalition of 35 creative and cultural organisations across Latin America have today issued a joint statement urging governments, technology companies, and industry leaders to protect and preserve the intellectual property rights of authors, artists, producers and publishers.

To amplify the message, the coalition has launched JusticIA, an initiative calling on policymakers to ensure right holders are protected. The movement comes amid rapid advances in generative artificial intelligence that is transforming the creative landscape.

Whilst AI offers huge opportunities and is being used widely across creative communities, it should not undermine creativity nor hurt rightsholders behind the work. The coalition’s unified message represents an unprecedented show of solidarity across multiple creative industries.

The joint statement calls for clear and meaningful transparency obligations on all generative AI providers. This means generative AI providers must keep accurate records of the materials used to develop their models and disclose those records to rightsholders with a legitimate interest. In addition to this, distributors must also be obliged to label wholly AI generated content, ensuring consumers are not misled.

To mark the launch of the campaign, cultural and creative voices from across Latin America have gathered in a virtual event to urge policymakers to uphold the principles of transparency and protection of creators’ rights as artificial intelligence is integrated into the cultural and creative sectors.

Speaking at the event, Adriana Restrepo, IFPI Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, said: “In the midst of this dynamic and changing landscape, it seems fair and appropriate that copyright and related rights be preserved and that the developers of artificial intelligence systems and models are obliged to act with transparency, reporting on the content they have used in the training of their models. All of us in this coalition are united around these ideas and this request that we are making today to all governments, legislators and public policymakers.”

The coalition is inviting additional industry bodies, policymakers, and members of the public to endorse the statement, which will be sent directly to politicians across the region.
