02 June 2016 - Press releaseSocial music company Instrumental partnered with UK artist on development strategy with debut single Dancing On My Own hitting over 10 million streams and selling 100,000 units worldwide.
Leading social music company, Instrumental, today congratulates Calum Scott, who has signed a worldwide recording deal with Capitol Records in the US. Scott, who has been part of the Instrumental artist network for 6 months released his version of Robyn’s ‘Dancing On My Own’ in March and has since spent 6 weeks in the UK Top 40, selling over 100,000 units worldwide, and hitting over 10 million streams.
With no traditional radio support, Calum and Vector Management worked with Instrumental, who devised a campaign via the use of meticulous analytics and insights in order to drive the launch through socials. With a particular focus on YouTube, the single got off to a strong start through a fan driven launch, but that then broadened out into a global hit through discovery and word of mouth driven by streaming playlists and music bloggers. The track has resonated on both sides of the Atlantic hitting the US and Canadian Top 5 on iTunes and Capitol were quick to contact Scott and fly him to the US.
Conrad Withey, CEO of Instrumental said “Calum is the perfect example of a new breed of social music talent. We first spotted his potential through YouTube data. The organic audience engagement for the video of ‘Dancing On My Own’ around the world was incredible. We weren’t even aware at that point of his Britain’s Got Talent appearance.”
Partnering with Luke Williams at Vector, Instrumental created a ‘social first’ strategy which has helped create steady and consistent build for Calum over the past 6 months. Williams said “It was amazing to have the belief from Instrumental. The team have been fantastic to work with, a great platform for any developing artist!”
Scott will now join Sam Smith on the Capitol roster, working with Virgin EMI in the UK. Emma Banks, Head of A&R at Instrumental said “It’s wonderful to see artists like Calum going on the great things. That’s what Instrumental is all about. He’s an outstanding artist and we now look forward to discovering and developing more talent like him’.
