IFPI convenes cross industry panel at UN Copyright Agency to examine the future of music licensing with AI
03 December 2025 - Press releaseWith AI licensing agreements accelerating and reshaping the music industry's relationship with generative AI, IFPI is bringing experts spanning music, AI and economics together to discuss AI training and music rights: with a focus on the report on copyright and music licensing frameworks by world leading economic experts at Compass Lexecon.
The report's findings have become even more urgent, and today [TUESDAY], IFPI brought its core themes back to centre stage at WIPO's Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights (SCCR).
Against a backdrop of rising commercial AI deployments and mounting calls for transparency, IFPI's AI and Music: License to Innovate panel gathered leading experts from across the AI value chain to examine how creators' rights can, and must, be protected when their works are used to train AI models.
This high-impact discussion explored what effective AI licensing looks like in practice, the barriers the industry must overcome, and the legal and policy frameworks needed to enable responsible innovation.
With Compass Lexecon's findings now shaping international policy conversations, the panel aims to translate their economic insights into concrete policies for global adoption.
IFPI CEO Victoria Oakley, urging policymakers to protect the music ecosystem, said:
"This year's WIPO SCCR is a great opportunity to engage in frank, solutions-driven dialogue at a pivotal moment. The choices policymakers make today will define how AI and music coexist tomorrow.
"Throughout the recording industry's entire history, artists and record companies have embraced, constantly adapted to, and collaborated with new technologies. AI is not an exception.
"We are here today ready to work together to improve networks and infrastructure supporting the growth of creative industries everywhere."
