hmv goes Dutch with new store in The Hague to open before end of the year

Music and popular culture retailer hmv is planning to open its first store in The Netherlands with a new site in The Hague in the latter stages of development. The new store will open its doors before the end of the year.

The expansion to The Netherlands will mean that hmv has a high street presence in a third EU market following successful launches across Ireland (in Dublin and Limerick) and Belgium (with two stores in Antwerp & Brussels). The retailer has over 100 sites across the UK with numerous planned openings in the coming six months.

Bringing together its successful music and pop culture format, the new hmv store will offer a range of music on vinyl alongside an extensive range of films and box-sets across Blu-Ray formats. The new opening will also aim to play host to the country’s most comprehensive range of entertainment merchandise.

Phil Halliday, Managing Director at hmv and Fopp said: “We’re planning to create a home for communities of fans to come together and share their love of music and popular culture – from K Pop to classical, heavy metal to EDM, films, Anime and books. When we open we’ll aim to bring ranges that can’t be found anywhere else under one roof. We’re confident that we can bring something new to shoppers and hope that fans will share our excitement when we open our doors.”

hmv was originally founded in the UK in 1921 as His Master’s Voice, as a gramophone brand and opened its first dedicated store in London. The business was acquired by Sunrise Records owner Doug Putman in 2017 and now has over 100 stores around the UK offering a wide selection of new release and catalogue titles. The retailer has been behind the vinyl revival in the UK and now accounts for 50% of all sales of the format.

It will also stage performances from up-and-coming acts through the hmv Live&Local programme which has been established to showcase local acts and give a platform to emerging talent.
