Final Line-up Announced For M.I.A.'S Meltdown Festival

Today Southbank Centre reveals the final line-up for rapper, producer, director and visual artist M.I.A.’s Meltdown festival. This year M.I.A. brings together emerging and established artists from across the world to create a fusion of global culture from Friday 9 – Sunday 18 June 2017.

New additions to M.I.A.’s line-up include:

  • Dance music maestros Soulwax performing their new album From Dewee - in a live studio set-up featuring a seven-piece band including three drummers (10 June)
  •  
  • South London grime superstar Giggs playing the Royal Festival Hall in a night packed with special guests (12 June)
  •  
  • New York City’s Princess Nokia performing her alternative hip-hop style in a show alongside Swedish rapper Yung Lean (14 June)
  •  
  • Hugely influential and experimental Atlanta label Awful Records presenting a late-night rave in the Clore Ballroom, with a performance from Awful Records founder Father and London based DJ’s and artists (16 June)
  •  
  • Electronic mastery on the Riverside Terrace from French artist Fakear (16 June)
  •  
  • Free outdoor parties throughout the festival, including an all-day Rinse FM Block Party; a Carnival Party and a Meltdown Mela
  •  
  • Hip-Hop Karaoke, giving visitors the chance to show off their rhyming skills live on stage (14 June)
  •  
  • A series of talks and debates presented in association with CMU, deconstructing the changing nature of the music industry (10 June)
  •  
  • An afternoon of free live music celebrating Refugee Week, featuring bands from all over the world on Riverside Terrace (18 June)

The acts above join a diverse global line-up that includes M.I.A.; Young Fathers; Crystal Castles; Young M.A; Mykki Blanco; MHD; JD Samson; Yung Lean; Afrikan Boy; I Wayne; Dexta Daps and Tommy Genesis. M.I.A.’s Meltdown also celebrates London's many diverse communities with an eclectic programme of free activity including a Carnival Party bringing the spirit of the Caribbean to the Thames with live music, costumes and dance classes; the Rinse FM Block Party featuring DJ’s and performances and a Meltdown Mela, a day of outdoor entertainment for all the family celebrating art and culture from South Asia. M.I.A. also takes to the stage to discuss her life and career in a special talk, I am...M.I.A.

Meltdown celebrates the start of Refugee Week on 18 June with an afternoon of free live music featuring musicians of refugee backgrounds. Produced in association with Counterpoint Arts, Refugee Week supports, produces and promotes art by and about migrants and refugees. Also on display is Refuge/e, a new installation by OVA + INE that transports a Lebanese refugee shelter to Southbank Centre’s site. Throughout the space visitors will hear the voices of refugees speaking about their daily lives alongside casts of their possessions, providing first-hand experience of the conditions experienced by many of the 1,500,000 Syrian refugees living in Lebanon today.
