Epidemic Sound partners with Musiio to improve music discovery with AI tagging

  • Epidemic Sound invests in AI tagging service making it easier for storytellers to find the perfect track in its player
  • Musiio’s AI tagging method automatically tags tracks with an additional 12 to 19 descriptive tags
  • Storytellers to benefit from improved tagging from autumn 2020 onwards

Singapore, Singapore and Stockholm, Sweden: Epidemic Sound (Epidemic), recently named on The Financial Times’ list of Europe's fastest growing companies for the second consecutive year, announces its partnership with Musiio to improve music discovery via innovative AI tagging enabling storytellers to better find the perfect track in its player from autumn 2020 onwards.

Epidemic Sound currently uses a system that sees its music reviewers provide tagging for Moods, Genres and BPM.

Now with Musiio, Epidemic will add an additional 12 to 19 tags to each track by transforming audio files into mathematical visualisations (spectrograms) and then extracting ‘features’ from these images into words we understand, such as BPM, Mood, Genre as well as additional tags that mention the ‘Key’, different emotions or energies, mentions of instruments or vocals used and a  ‘Quality’ tag that depicts the recording and audio quality of a track.

Per-Anders, Chief Technology Officer at Epidemic Sound says:

Whether you’re a YouTuber, a huge broadcaster or a freelancer, having the right kind of music can make or break your content, which is why searching for music can often be one of the most time consuming and frustrating parts of making a video.

“Our product team is committed to making music discovery as smooth and as relevant as possible here at Epidemic, which is why we’re super excited to partner with Musiio and are looking forward to hearing feedback from our customers on how this new feature helps with their creative process.”

Co-Founder and CEO at Musiio Hazel Savage says of the partnership:

“Epidemic is an amazing company to be working with. We are customers ourselves for our how-to videos! Whilst Epidemic rightly pride themselves on having good quality tagging which bolsters their search, they recognise that not everyone searching for music has the same musical vocabulary and therefore the more descriptors you can supply, the better the search experience can be.”

“It’s great to see companies like Epidemic Sound harnessing the power of new technology to continue to improve their product.”

Epidemic prides itself on fuelling the success of creators and ensuring democratised access to music. With the additional tags, on each track, storytellers now have a higher chance of finding a relevant track, and by having a more robust search function in their player, Epidemic can ensure that it is providing relevant options for storytellers not the latest tracks that have just been added to the player.
