British-Chinese sibling duo sign to Communion Records

British-Chinese sibling duo Esme Emerson announce their signing with Communion Records with the release of new single ‘Please’, taken from a wider project due later in 2024.

For Esme and Emerson Lee-Scott, kindness and sincerity is the core of everything. Growing up together in their Suffolk family home, the pair began writing songs together during Emerson’s final year at university and quickly realised how well their creative ideas aligned. They found comfort in their shared musician brain, and discovered a sense of joy reached via their combined creativity and vulnerability.

Released today, new single ‘Please’ marks the beginning of a monumental year for the duo. Signing to Communion Records, they are currently working towards their first EP for the label (due later in 2024), which showcases their explorative balance of gentle melodies and electronic elements comparable to the likes of Big Thief and Slow Pulp.

“‘Please’ is about young, queer love,” explains Esme. “It’s about all the tentative moments and shame that comes with something so confusing yet simple. It’s about feeling unsure and wrong, angry and gentle. It’s about such a pure and sweet emotion, but how that feeling can sit so sickly and rotten in your gut.”

Earmarked as ones to watch by The Face magazine and starring in Dr Martens recent Lunar New Year campaign, Esme & Emerson are multidisciplinary artists. ‘Please’ was written in their family home, before being co-produced with close friend and collaborator Hugo M. Hardy at his studio in London and at Old Jet in Suffolk. It is accompanied by artwork painted by Esme, and a visualiser lending from the pair’s shared love of visuals and literature.
