Blame, Black Holes, and Broken Promises: Public Perception of the ‘Right Thing’ Diverges Sharply from Government Action, Says NTIA

Following statement from the Chancellor on Pre Budget Position  - Statement from Michael Kill, CEO of the Night Time Industries Association:
“As we approach the festive period and the oncoming local elections, one thing is clear: public perception of what is ‘right’ is increasingly out of step with the decisions coming from government and the Chancellor. Blame won’t protect anyone at the polls. Budgets matter, and voters are judging leaders not on excuses, but on whether they act in the public interest. Empty coffers, black holes in spending, and broken manifesto promises are not a political footnote, they are a lived reality for late-night businesses and the communities they serve.

The night-time economy continues to face rising costs, staffing challenges, regulatory complexity, higher energy bills and the lingering impacts of lockdowns. Yet when government action conflicts with what the public believes is right, through potential tax rises, unmet promises, or misplaced priorities—trust erodes, and livelihoods hang in the balance.

Our sector needs leadership that aligns with public expectations: policies that genuinely support late-night businesses, safeguard cultural venues, improve safety and transport, and provide certainty for entrepreneurs and employees. Shifting blame, pointing to the past, or ignoring industry or public sentiment will not protect jobs, culture, or confidence at the ballot box.”
