Audius Surpasses 5 Million Monthly Active Users

The community-owned decentralized music protocol is now the one of largest consumer apps based on the blockchain ever.

Audius, the decentralized music app, has grown to five million active users, becoming one of the first truly successful consumer-facing Web3 apps. Since its launch in 2018, Audius has seen steady organic growth thanks to community-run marketing.

“Blockchain can do really amazing things for music. It can improve music fans’ experience and guarantee artists’ control over their valuable work,” says Roneil Rumburg, co-founder and CEO of Audius. “We have worked to create a strong, engaged community and an easy-to-navigate interface, and that’s what’s attracted and kept fans and musicians on Audius.”

As a decentralized protocol, every Audius user is also an owner. Audius’ utility token offers these owners clear ways to influence and change the service to fit their needs. As a result, Audius has become a popular place to experiment for tech-loving artists like deadmau5 and 3lau, but it has also provided a much-needed haven for specialized scenes and cross-genre exploration, music that’s often underserved by existing streaming music services and platforms. What happens and what takes off depends on the community, now 5 million strong.

“Because our community decides what features they want and need, they come up with initiatives and build the things they want,” Rumburg explains. “They are invested in the community, because in the end, they own it.”
