The Ghosts Of Christmas Past

Artist: Kirsty Bertarelli (featuring the YMCA North Staffordshire Choir)
Label: Decca
Impact date: December 8
ROTD featured date: Friday 21 November 2014

We say

Featuring Pink Floyd legend Nick Mason on drums, this gorgeous country-tinged seasonal track comes from Kirsty Bertarelli, a singer-songwriter with quite a pedigree. She co-wrote the UK no.1 hit Black Coffee by All Saints back in 2000, has collaborated over the past couple of years with trance DJ & producer Armin Van Buuren and recorded her debut album in Nashville. For this track, she enlisted the help of 28 people from the YMCA back in her home town of Stoke to give extra power and poignancy to the crescendo after the chorus and recorded it all at Abbey Road Studios. She’ll be performing live with Jools Holland and his band on his Radio 2 show this coming Monday night (November 24). We’re always surprised that more contemporary musicians don’t record Christmas tracks. This feels like one of those perfect sentimental and reflective songs that could live on every yuletide now for years to come.
