Sentric forges three-pronged deal with Defenders Ent/DMMP

JV, sub-publishing agreement and brand new service will benefit the urban market

Independent publisher Sentric Music has inked a multi-faceted deal with urban music company Defenders Entertainment.

Defenders Ent publishing outfit, Digital Music and Media Publishing (DMMP) is one of the UK’s fastest growing independent urban music and film publishing companies, with a vast catalogue of music and film titles stretching across genres such as Pop, Grime, Rap, RnB, AfroBeats, Dancehall, House and more.

To date, DMMP’s catalogue and services have contributed to music compilations, television series, movie soundtracks and short films for a range of clients, including Universal, Geffen Records and Ministry of Sound, JD Sports, Adidas and Harry Hill’s TV Burp.

Sentric has signed a sub-publishing agreement with DMMP, which holds numerous copyrights including a share of 2016 smash hit One Dance as the original publisher of Do You Mind from Crazy Cousinz Ft Kyla, which is heavily sampled on the Drake track.

The two companies have also set-up a joint venture in order to sign new writers, producers and artists, paving the way for a wealth of new talent coming into the industry.

Finally, a brand new service, Defenders/Sentric, based on Sentric's core 28-day contract model, will be launched with a focus on the urban genre.

Defenders Ent and DMMP MD Corey Johnson said: “As soon as Peter and Chris [Meehan – Sentric CEO] explained how Sentric's systems work, it was the only option for Defenders Ent and DMMP. There needs to be more transparency around YouTube, Soundcloud and live revenues, and Sentric provides that.”

Helping to bring Sentric's core system and 28-day contract model to Grime, Rap, Dancehall, AfroBeat and other urban genres is not only an honour but a massive responsibility. It will change how traditional publishing is done. We need to make sure writers, artists and composers are paid when they are most active and in need.”

Sentric Creative Director Peter McCamley said: “We are delighted to be working with Corey. The access to urban talent he has through Defenders and a multitude of other networks is just incredible. We look forward to maximising that potential through our JV with DMMP and helping the exciting emerging artists and writers that come to him with our flexible 28-day model and global infrastructure.”

Over the past 10 years, Sentric Music has grown rapidly to become a global, award-winning independent publisher, best known for its forward-thinking standard agreements whereby artists retain control of their copyright and use the company’s technology, infrastructure and creative services to develop their career and add value to their songs. The company is now home to over 80,000 songwriters and represents hundreds of thousands of songs on behalf of songwriters, music publishers and other catalogue owners worldwide. It has offices in Hamburg, Amsterdam and New York as well as its Liverpool headquarters.
