DIGITAL MUSIC TRENDS REACHES MILESTONE 200TH EPISODE

Five and a half years since publishing its first show the Digital Music Trends (DMT) podcast reached its 200th episode this week. Started by Andrea Leonelli in April 2009, DMT is the longest running music industry podcast in circulation today.

Conceived as a way to better understand the transition of the music industry into the digital age, DMT started its life as an audio-only podcast focused on music technology startups. The first guest of the show was Nick Crocker, the co-founder of We Are Hunted, an Australian music discovery startup that was eventually acquired by Twitter. Early shows from 2009 included interviews with the founders of Mixcloud and Songkick, companies that are still thriving today, but also with startups that have long since ceased operations or have been acquired.

One such interview was that with the CEO of Lala, a music streaming startup that was acquired by Apple just a few days after the DMT interview in December 2009. This fuelled speculations that Apple was planning a move into the on-demand streaming space, but it would actually take another four years for the company to make its first move in this area by acquiring Beats Music.

In 2012, Andrea decided to turn the show into a video podcast inspired by the work of networks like Twit.tv and Revision3. This led the show’s adoption its current virtual panel format, which is made up of guests from all over the world gathering for one hour each week to analyze the most interesting news in the music technology space and their potential repercussions.

DMT also continues to publish standalone interviews with both startups and established music companies as part of the DMT 1-2-1 show. Now on its 74th episode, the DMT 1-2-1 recently featured social music apps developer Smule, video streaming service VEVO and merchandise startup AtVenu.

Both shows are distributed as downloadable podcasts and are available on streaming services such as YouTube, SoundCloud, MixCloud, Spreaker, Stitcher and TuneIn Radio.

Episode 200 of Digital Music Trends is live featuring guests Brian Zisk (Sf Music Tech Summit), Olivier de Simone (Urturn) and Kevin Breuner (CD Baby) with appearances from the CCO of WiMP and the CEO of Musicxray.
