BBC Radio 1Xtra Heads To Liverpool For Series Of Outreach Sessions For Local 16-24 Year Olds



BBC Radio 1Xtra - in partnership with LIMF Academy -  today announced a range of distinctive and bespoke outreach sessions ahead of 1Xtra Live - the stations annual flagship live music event. Running from Thursday 22nd September until Friday 7th October, 16-24 year olds in Liverpool will have the opportunity to learn all about the music industry from some of the biggest names in the business. 

Sessions will include:

From Flyers to Fame: Putting on your own event - hosted by 1Xtra’s Jamz Supernova

Want to put on your own live music event or club night? Come and hear from the experts on how to get started, how to make an impact and how to get people there. 

Panellists include BBC Radio 1Xtra staff, as well as leading Liverpool-based promoters - Andrew Hill (Abandon Silence), Paul Duhaney (Africa Oye) and Chris Wareing (SJM Promotions).

1Xtra Playlist Meeting with 1Xtra Music Producers

The 1Xtra Playlist team decamps to Liverpool to give young people a unique insight into how tracks get to be played on a radio station, and how they make it on to the BBC 1Xtra Playlist. 

LIMF Academy’s Music Biz 101 Masterclass

Everything you need to know about the music industry from getting paid to getting heard, co-hosted by BBC Radio 1Xtra's A.Dot and BBC Radio Merseyside’s Dave Monks. From demo sessions, to network events with 1Xtra DJ A.Dot and Chris Price, Head of Music at Radio 1 & 1Xtra. Other panellists include SG Lewis, Friction (Shogun), Ray BLK, Steve Levine (Grammy winning music producer) and Peter Guy (Founder of GetIntoThis), amongst others.

BBC Radio 1Xtra and BBC Academy professionals share their insider knowledge of how to get a job in the media, and offer industry standard media training taster sessions. 

Live broadcast of BBC Radio 1Xtra’s Homegrown show with DJ Target

On Sunday 2nd October, BBC Radio 1Xtra’s DJ Target will be broadcasting live from BBC Merseyside, shining the light on some of Liverpool’s finest local talent in his Homegrown show (4-7pm).

As well as the specially produced sessions, 1Xtra will also be bringing its street studio to Liverpool ONE shopping centre on Saturday 24th September from 11am. Budding MCs and artists will be able to attend and record some bars - with the chance to get their performance heard on BBC Radio 1Xtra. 

On Friday 30th September, Radio 1Xtra are also teaming up with BBC Music Introducing and LIMF Academy for a night of home-grown Merseyside talent. 1Xtra’s Jamz Supernova and BBC Introducing in Merseyside’s Dave Monks will be co-hosting an evening of Liverpool’s finest undiscovered, under the radar musical talent including an open mic session.  Urban Jazz act Gazelle, Alt-Soul artist Spokazi, Neo-Soul singer-songwriter and producer XamVolo, RnB songstress Taya and emerging electronic producer-DJ SUEDEBROWN complete the line-up. 

Yasmin Evans, , DJ says: “1Xtra Live is the station’s biggest event of the year and to be able to work with so many ambitious and enthusiastic young people in Liverpool in the lead up to the event is a massive bonus. I can’t wait to see what talent we come across.”

Louise Kattenhorn, Radio 1 and 1Xtra Editor says: “Our presenters and outreach team are really looking forward to taking part in this programme of  inspiring events - we love sharing our skills and knowledge with enthusiastic young people and in return we learn a lot from them.”

Yaw Owusu, LIMF Music Curator says: "The development, showcasing and signposting of new music talent is core to the LIMF Academy and all our activity. To be able to partner with BBC Radio 1Xtra and their outreach team on a series of special events for new and emerging music creators from the region is an exciting prospect and one that I'm confident will be rewarding for all who get involved.”

Outreach activity is an integral part of the build up to 1Xtra Live, with this year’s sessions following on from the success of 1Xtra’s 2015 outreach programme in Leeds & Bradford. Tickets will be available on Friday 16th September at 16:00 via the 1Xtra website (www.bbc.co.uk/1xtra)
