WE SAY
This opening track from Serious Poke, the debut solo album by Fred Abbott, is a barnstorming slab of lively power pop. Fred is the former guitarist and keyboard player with indie favourites Noah & The Whale and he enlisted the help of several guys from the band plus a bunch of other mates to pull this all together. With co-production from Martin Hollis, noted for his work with The Rolling Stones and Nick Cave’s Grinderman, the tracks on the album come from jam sessions that he and some of the guys used to have during soundchecks with NATW over the past five years, many of which he’s been itching to finally get down and hear them properly released. We’re glad he did. With hints of Dave Grohl's Foo Fighters and rock legend Tom Petty on display musically and vocally here, it’s certainly a departure from what he’s been up to with his band of old but nicely confident and assured from the off. The album launch party is in London on July 31 at The Borderline. Take a shot, crank it up and just let rip.
