Wild Smiles
Never Wanted This

Sunday Best Recordings

WE SAY

Premium-grade power pop here from Winchester trio Wild Smiles with the first single to come from their debut album Always Tomorrow (due Oct 27). Key UK radio support has come from the likes of Zane Lowe and Huw Stephens at Radio 1, Steve Lamacq and Lauren Laverne at 6 Music and John Kennedy at Xfm. Now the word is spreading internationally too with Australia's Triple J, Sweden's Gimme Indie and various US college stations already behind the band. This single has premiered in the past few days with SPIN, who said their 'raucous, Ramones-owning sound rebels against over-produced cleanliness and channels an irreverent distaste for convention'. Comprising of brothers Chris and Jo Peden on vocals and guitars, along with Ben Cook on drums, the lads have been solidly playing live and building their reputation over the past year. Forthcoming gigs include performances at Camp Bestival in Dorset next month and Bestival on the Isle Of Wight at the start of September, before more extensive dates around the album release. Currently featured as one of the Hottest New Bands on Spotify, we hear Nevermind-era Nirvana in here; crisp, hooky, youthful guitar angst, delivered briskly and efficiently. This is no-nonsense rock from fresh talent that speaks to their peers directly whilst the rest of us can appreciate their universal message of frustration with society around them too.
