Sandrayati
Petals To The Fear

Decca

WE SAY

Today’s Ones To Watch 2023 is Indonesian singer-songwriter Sandrayati. Born to a Filipino mother and American father, and raised on the islands of Java and Bali, Sandrayati grew up embracing musical culture. Her parents, both of whom work with protecting the land rights of indigenous peoples, share a love of folk music and protest songs. Drawing on the challenges her parents faced in their work, Sandrayati began writing her first songs when the family relocated from Indonesia to the Philippines. Her silky acoustic guitar tones and soulful vocals have seen her collaborate with Damien Rice and Ólafur Arnalds, perform at Cop26 representing Asia and support RY X on his European tour. This year, she will be releasing her debut album, Safe Ground, produced by Ólafur Arnalds and inspired by the longing to define home. Petals To The Fear is the latest in a string of singles from the album and highlights her beautiful vocals, backed by delicate guitar melodies. Tastemaker support has come from Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, Clash and 1883. There’s a timeless quality about Sandrayati’s vocals, and with each new track we hear, we believe she will be a new favourite for many in the folk/singer-songwriter world in 2023.
