WE SAY
We heard the Gabry Ponte Remix of Haiducii's Dragostea Din Tei on Radio Deejay while in Venice and thought it sounded like a smash - like the best track Gigi D'Agostino never made. Sure enough, it then went to no 1 in Italy. Then we found out that version is a cover. The original is this version by O-Zone - a pop band from Romania who sold 250,000 albums in their native country. This version is also a smash - it's all about that yodelly opening hook. Well done to Time who picked up O-Zone's album rights for Europe along with a decent video, and to Jive (who had several hits with Time's Tamperer over here) for picking up the UK rights. Meanwhile we hear Sony's new hire Martin Dodd is cooking up a third version. Anyway, this is shaping up to be the out-there Europop smash of the spring and Jive are first off the mark in the UK.
