Belle
Surfacing

Mercury

WE SAY

If the recent Telegraph feature is anything to go by, 17 year-old Belle (full name Annabel Carter) is the new Joss Stone. Certainly they're both young, talented and come from Devon, but the material on Belle's debut album shows that, vocally, she has more in common with Beth Gibbons or Alison Goldfrapp. Signed to Mercury when she was 14, and managed by Mark Hargreaves at Crown, she has been developed with the skill you'd expect. Her sound, a combination of simple pop numbers and minimalist vocal work is an intriguing strategy, but one that should yield success. JF
