Noah Kahan’s Stick Season leads biggest songs of 2024 so far
Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, Benson Boone and Hozier climb the ranks
Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department is the biggest album of the year to date as Billie Eilish, Oasis and Chappell Roan make ground
SINGLES
As we enter the final few months of the year, Noah Kahan’s Stick Season holds on to its title as the biggest song of 2024 so far, Official Charts can reveal. However, with several new entries and fast-rising hits from the likes of Chappell Roan, Billie Eilish and Sabrina Carpenter making an impact over the past quarter, the end-of-year Official Singles Chart crown is very much all still to play for.
Stick Season spent seven weeks at Number 1 at the beginning of this year - the longest consecutive stint at the top in 2024 – and has shifted 1.72 million chart units in 2024 so far, including 201 million combined audio and video streams.
Benson Boone edges closer to the top, lifting one place to land at Number 2 with his own UK chart-topper Beautiful Things, with Boone also claiming another entry further down the list with Slow It Down (35). Benson is followed closely by Teddy Swims with the soulful Lose Control at Number 3, which peaked at Number 2 and is the most downloaded song of the year so far with 60.9k downloads.
Anyone itching for some caffeine? The UK’s Official Song of the Summer, Espresso by Sabrina Carpenter (which spent seven non-consecutive weeks at the top) lands at Number 4 on the year-to-date list, while Hozier’s two-week Number 1 Too Sweet rounds out the Top 5.
2024 has proven to be the year of country in the UK, with the genre undergoing a massive renaissance over the last few months, so it’s only fitting that several country tracks are on the rise to impact the year-to-date Top 10; A Bar Song (Tipsy) by Shaboozey is up eight places since June at Number 6, Dasha’s Austincomes in at 7, up six, and Beyoncé’s TEXAS HOLD ‘EM at 8 - the superstar’s first UK Number 1 single since 2008, and longest-running to boot - completes the trio of country-tinged hits.
Completing the Top 10, we have Taylor Swift’s jagged New Wave banger Cruel Summer (9) following the arrival of the monolithic Eras Tour on UK shores this year, and Sabrina Carpenter’s former chart-topperPlease Please Please (10), the second of a trio of Number 1s for Sabrina this year.
Freshly breaking into the year-to-date Top 20 are huge tracks from Billie Eilish and Chappell Roan. Billie’sBirds of a Feather spent sixteen weeks in the Official Singles Chart Top 10 over the summer and is now on the cusp of breaking the end-of-year Top 10, currently at Number 12. Just one place behind at Number 13 is Chappell Roan’s breakthrough track Good Luck, Babe!, while rising Luton singer-songwriter Myles Smith makes an appearance with Stargazing – his first Top 10 hit – at Number 15.
Other breakthrough hits include British-Cypriot producer Artemas’ I Like The Way You Kiss Me (17), Djo – aka Stranger Things actor Joe Keery – with End of Beginning (20), Michael Marcagi’s Scared to Start (21), Belong Together by Mark Ambor (27), Million Dollar Baby by Tommy Richman (28), and Zach Bryan’s first Top 40, I Remember Everything ft. Kacey Musgraves (34).
ALBUMS
Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department is officially the UK’s biggest album of 2024 so far.
Tortured Poets has spent eight non-consecutive weeks at Number 1 since its release in May, and has racked up 667,500 chart units to date. It’s both the most-streamed and best-selling album of 2024, with a physical sales total amounting to 265,000.
Noah Kahan’s Stick Season enjoys a place at Number 3 in the year-to-date list, while Billie Eilish lifts one place to Number 4 with her chart topping Hit Me Hard and Soft, which earned Billie the biggest opening week of her career back in May.
Despite being released in 2023, Chappell Roan’s debut album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princessenters the list for the first time at Number 12 after an extraordinary breakthrough summer for Chappell. Currently the biggest debut album of 2024 so far, having seen a monumental rise in streams and sales as the British public discover her music, the Missouri singer continues to dominate the weekly Official Singles Chart too with no less than three of her hits riding high on the current week’s chart. Expect further climbs for Chappell before 2024 is out.
A sweep of big summertime smashes crash straight into the list including reigning singles queen Sabrina Carpenter with her sixth studio album Short ‘n’ Sweet (14), while one of the biggest comebacks in history has helped Oasis’ debut album Definitely Maybe into the Top 20 (18) as the record celebrates its 30thanniversary. Possibly the most talked about album of the summer, BRAT by Charli xcx rounds out the Top 20 (20).
More chart-topping albums released in 2024 to land in the year-to-date list are Ariana Grande’s seventh album Eternal Sunshine at Number 22, Dua Lipa’s Radical Optimism at Number 31, and very close behind, Eminem’s The Death of Slim Shady (Coup De Grace) at Number 32.
Finally, as Linkin Park reform with two new band members and brand-new music – their first since the passing of Chester Bennington - their greatest hits collection Papercuts: Singles Collection 2000-2023enters the list at Number 38 as fans revisit their catalogue.
