Troy Miller announced as Diana Ross producer after ‘Giant’ Ivors win 09 Sep 2020
Troy Miller has been revealed as producer for a multitude of upcoming studio releases from Motown legend Diana Ross.
The announcement comes after Miller won the PRS for Music Most Performed Work Ivor Novello award for Calvin Harris’ Giant, alongside songwriters Rag‘n’Bone Man, Adam Wiles and Jamie Hartman.
The win came in the same week that BBC Radio 2 selected Miller’s most recent completed project as its album of the week - Gregory Porter’s sixth studio album, All Rise, which was released on August 28, 2020.
Miller is co-managed by Conchord Management and LME Worldwide, and represented by Bucks Music Group for publishing.
Bucks’ Director A&R, Sarah Liversedge Platz, said of his Ivors win: “It has been an incredible journey so far for Troy. I have represented him at Bucks for five years now, and it really does feel like just the beginning of what we will achieve together. Troy is extremely ambitious as a producer, songwriter, musician, conductor and orchestral arranger. He sets his sights on something and nails it every time.
“It is a pleasure to be working with his managers, Cathy Mathalone and Rene Renner. I have no doubt that Troy will be the ‘go to’ producer and songwriter globally by the end of the year. Our next target for him is a Grammy!”
As well as his role as producer, Miller will feature as a musician on Ross’ upcoming tracks, playing drum, guitar, bass and keyboard lines, while also arranging and conducting orchestral elements.
Troy Miller is a multi-instrumentalist, producer, songwriter and conductor who began his career touring as a drummer for Roy Ayers in 2003.
In 2006, Miller was invited to join Amy Winehouse’s band, becoming an integral member for the next five years.
Subsequently, Miller toured and performed with the likes Chaka Khan, Donna Summer, Laura Mvula, Macy Gray, George Benson and Mark Ronson, while writing and producing albums for Gregory Porter, Emeli Sande, Rebecca Ferguson, Jamie Cullum and Laura Mvula, who’s album, The Dreaming Room, won the Ivor Novello award for Album of the Year in 2017.
It was while working with Gregory Porter in LA that Diana Ross approached Miller at the East West Studios.
Miller remembers: “Diana said she’d heard good things about me. She asked the engineer to leave the studio and we talked for two hours about life, music and everything in between. Eventually she said ‘Do you want to produce some songs for me?’ How could I refuse?!
“One of the first things Diana said to me was not to reference any of her previous records - a challenge considering her music is so well known. She was more concerned with the message, being positive, uplifting and having a sense of ‘togetherness’. I like to go deep into the music and everything I do tends to have a soulfulness to it, and when you add a legend into the mix it gets really exciting.”
