Noah Kahan’s Stick Season remains biggest song of 2024 so far

Summer hits by Sabrina Carpenter, Dasha and Shaboozey enter year-to-date Top 10

Taylor Swift earns biggest album of 2024 so far with The Tortured Poets Department

SINGLES
Noah Kahan’s Stick Season remains the Official biggest single of 2024 so far, as we reach the halfway point of the year, Official Charts can confirm.

Stick Season reigned supreme at the top of the Official Singles Chart for seven consecutive weeks at the beginning of 2024 – and remains the longest-running Number 1 single of the year so far.

The first UK chart-topper from Vermont singer-songwriter Noah, taken from his third studio album of the same name, the song’s title refers to a transitional time in Vermont between autumn and winter.

According to Official Charts Company data, Stick Season has shifted 1.37 million chart units, including 160 million combined audio and video streams in 2024 so far. Originally released in 2022, the song’s lifetime total currently stands at 1.9 million chart units and 218 million streams in the UK.

Coming in at Number 2, we have Teddy Swims’ soulful Lose Control, which is also the most digitally downloaded single of 2024 so far (51,300 downloads), while Benson Boone’s former breakthrough Number 1 Beautiful Things lands at Number 3.

One new entry that is likely to rise further on the list throughout the year is Sabrina Carpenter’s Espresso (4), which spent five weeks at Number 1 before being unseated by Sabrina’s follow-up, Please Please Please. The track has already gathered 763,000 combined chart units including 85.7 million streams since its release in April.

Rounding out the Top 5, we have Hozier’s first UK Number 1 single, Too Sweet, which topped the Official Singles Chart for two weeks.

One of the dominant themes of 2024 so far has been a well-earned renaissance for country music in the UK, and as such we have plenty of country tracks burning up the biggest songs of 2024 so far. Beyoncé’s chart-topping TEXAS HOLD ‘EM leads the pack in the Top 10 (6) while breakthrough smashes Austin by Dasha (13) and Shaboozey’s A Bar Song (Tipsy)(14) earn a spot in the Top 20.

Further down, there are further country-fuelled appearances from Zach Bryan and Kacey Musgraves on I Remember Everything (28) and Post Malone & Morgan Wallen with I Had Some Help (36).

Ariana Grande sinks two entries in the Top 40 with two of the biggest hits from eternal sunshine; the handbag house strut of yes, and? (16) and the Robyn-esque we can’t be friends (wait for your love) (19).

Two tracks from Dua Lipa’s chart-topping third record Radical Optimism are also present; the hypnotic Houdini (22) and Training Season (31) both of which were Top 10 hits on the Official Singles Chart.

Other 2024 single releases to make the year-to-date list include; Artemas’s i like the way you kiss me (15), Taylor Swift’s fortnight ft. Post Malone (17), Michael Marcagi’s Scared To Start (18), and Ella Henderson & Rudimental’s Coolio-sampling Alibi (21).

Rounding out the Top 40, we have Tommy Richman’s Million Dollar Baby (30), Mark Ambor’s Belong Together (32) and Kygo and Ava Max’s Whatever (37), which samples Shakira’s 2001 classic Whenever, Wherever.

ALBUMS
Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department is officially the biggest album of 2024 so far in the UK.

The eleventh studio album from the US superstar, Tortured Poets has dominated the Official Chart ever since its debut in May, spending seven of its 10 chart weeks at Number 1, and the rest at Number 2.

Accordingly, Official Charts Company data reveals that, despite being available for less than two full months, Tortured Poets has already accumulated over 542,200 chart units, including 251,000 physical sales, making it the most physically-purchased LP of the year so far.

Upon its record-breaking Number 1 debut in the UK, Tortured Poets became Taylor’s 12thUK Number 1 album, matching Madonna’s long-held all-time chart record, putting Taylor and Madonna in joint lead as the female artists with the most UK Number 1 albums. As well as the biggest opening week sales of Taylor’s career, Tortured Poets was the biggest opening week of any artist since Ed Sheeran’s Divide in 2017.

Proving that Taylor is the most popular artist in pop right now, five albums from her back catalogue are present in the Top 20: 1989 (Taylor’s Version) (7), Lover (12), Midnights (14), folklore (15) and reputation (18).

The Weeknd’s long-charting greatest hits collection The Highlights lands at Number 2, withNoah Kahan’s Stick Season at Number 3.

The Top 5 is completed by Olivia Rodrigo’s GUTS (4) and Billie Eilish’s experimental, ultra-personal third record HIT ME HARD AND SOFT (5), which was released in May and awarded Eilish the biggest opening week of her career upon its Number 1 debut.

Ariana Grande’s seventh studio album eternal sunshine enters the year-to-date chart at Number 11, while Beyoncé’s acclaimed reclamation of country, COWBOY CARTER lands at Number 16. Both records topped the Official Albums Chart, earning each artist their respective fifth UK chart-topper.

Other 2024 albums making their mark include Dua Lipa’s chart-topping third record Radical Optimism (26), Prelude To Ecstasy, the acclaimed Number 1 debut album by British art-rock five-piece The Last Dinner Party (37) and Kanye West & Ty Dolla $ign’s VULTURES 1 (40).
