National Album Day today announces the list of albums that are being given an exclusive limited edition release for this annual event taking place on Saturday 18th October, which this year is themed around rock music. The albums, a blend of classic reissues and new releases, will be available to purchase through independent and specialist music stores across the UK and online/via digital platforms on National Album Day, with many available for pre-order from today. See full list at the end.
Now in its eighth edition since being launched by the BPI and ERA in association with broadcast partner BBC Radio 2 in 2018, National Album Day (NAD) celebrates the 'art of the album' and artists being able to tell their authentic stories through a much-loved format that has seen its sales on vinyl rise consecutively by a combined 3163% over the past 17 years.
Earlier this week, Wolf Alice, Architects, Nova Twins, and metal icons Iron Maiden were announced as NAD Album Champions as passionate advocates of a genre that remains at the heart of British music (over 50% of all Official Chart Vinyl album sales in 2024).
A breadth of collectible classic and contemporary recordings by a diverse range of rock artists, many presented in limited edition coloured vinyl, are being released. The list of 60 titles is led by the 50th Anniversary Edition of Queen's iconic A Night At The Opera, featuring Bohemian Rhapsody. The album is being given a world-wide release (on crystal clear vinyl & gold labels), and in the UK is being re-issued to coincide with NAD. Amy Macdonald's much-loved sophomore LP from 2010, A Curious Thing, is included in the line up, while Scotland is also represented by The Jesus and Mary Chain's Psychocandy, and Teenage Fanclub's Grand Prix. Flying the flag for Wales is Stereophonics' Language. Sex. Violence. Other? and Manic Street Preachers' This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours. Punk and new wave get a shout through Sex Pistols' Never Mind The Bollocks, and The Stranglers' Rattus Norvegicus. Besides Queen, a number of other albums are celebrating their 50th anniversaries, including Patti Smith's acclaimed debut, Horses, Status Quo's On The Level, and Steve Hillage's Fish Rising. Other legendary icons are present in the form of Elvis Presley From Elvis in Memphis, Lou Reed Transformer, Jimi Hendrix Axis: Bold As Love, and The Rolling Stones' Their Satanic Majesties Request. In a Summer where Oasis rekindled our love affair with Britpop, Liam Gallagher's As You Were is included in the NAD list along with offerings from many other contemporary artists, including SKIN, Architects, Kasabian, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
