MRC Data Reveals Spain 360 Report 21 Apr 2021
With more in-home engagement, consumers are connecting with music in many ways:
- 86% of the general population in Spain engages with music, with 62% saying music is important/extremely important to them, followed by music videos (33%) and live streamed/virtual music events (30%)
- 94% of music listeners say they listen to music at home.
With streaming numbers on the rise, music listeners are using more online options, showing growth across multiple platforms:
- 52% of music listeners in Spain stream music online through websites/apps in a typical week and41% discover new music/artists when streaming music videos, showing a significant increase from 2020 (+6% and +3% respectively vs. 2020)
As traditional formats soften due to closures and lockdowns, consumers are limited in the physical music engagement:
- AM/FM radio listenership amongst music listeners shows a 3% decline from 2020, with now 52%saying they listen to music over the radio in a typical week.
- Purchase of physical music or digital albums/tracks has also declined (-4% vs. 2020), with now 51%of listeners saying they purchased these formats in the past year.
Online streaming is poised to grow as more consumers turn to online, connected experiences:
- Though 92% of music listeners utilize music streaming services, only 11% of music listeners are currently paying for an online music streaming service subscription, but 32% say they are likely to subscribe to a music streaming service in the next 6 months.
- This has also led to an increase in in-home device acceptance, with listeners moving towards high-tech devices: 28% of listeners use smart TVs (+6% vs. 2020) and 19% use smart speakers (+4% vs. 2020) for music listening.
Music has become an integral part of social entertainment:
- 26% of music listeners discover music on social media sites, while 19% do so on short video clip sites like TikTok.
Live music fans can’t wait to go back, but are still cautious:
- 67% of Gen Pop plan on attending a live in-person music event in the coming year, as long as COVID risk is minimized.
