New home of Abbey Road Institute, school for the next generation of music producers and sound engineers

Announced as host venue for Abbey Road Studios’ third annual Equalise festival on 5 March 2022 

Abbey Road Studios is proud to announce that Islington’s much-loved Angel Studios will reopen this week as a commercial recording space and as the flagship location for Abbey Road Institute. Abbey Road, which took Angel’s lease last year after its closing in 2019, has completed an extensive six-month restoration of the Grade II-listed building and will bring it back to life as a vibrant studio, welcoming both pop and Hollywood projects, as well as a home for the music producers and sound engineers of tomorrow and host of the upcoming Abbey Road Equalise festival.

Angel Studios has played an integral role in the development of countless artists and is the birthplace of records by The Cure, Sam Smith, Adele, Siouxsie and the Banshees, One Direction and Robbie Williams, as well as iconic film & TV scores including The Lion King, Planet Earth, Downton Abbey and Moulin Rouge. 

Abbey Road Institute, which outgrew its home in St. John’s Wood owing to student demand, is a training ground for the next generation of music producers and sound engineers, with recent alumni going on to work with the likes of Little Mix, Madonna, J Hus, Calvin Harris, Pink, James Bay and for employers including Abbey Road Studios, Netflix, Universal Music and Ninja Tune. Students will continue to use the school’s dedicated studio at Abbey Road, alongside the new headquarters in Islington. 

To mark the reopening, Angel Studios will host the third annual Abbey Road Equalise festival on Saturday 5 March, to coincide with International Women’s Day 2022. Designed to inspire and empower young women from across the UK to consider a career in music production and engineering, the free festival will feature a range of workshops, masterclasses and panels, with the full line up set to be announced soon. Equalise is part of Abbey Road’s wider programme of supporting and creating opportunities for under-represented groups in the creative industries.
