TikTok releases its summer hits of 2020
13 September 2020 - Press release
TikTok has today released its summer hits of 2020 in the UK, the first time ever it's released its biggest summer tracks on the platform.
Trending TikTok challenges have skyrocketed tracks to the top of TikTok's summer charts. DaBaby and Roddy Ricch's 'ROCKSTAR' has been the number one sound of the summer, with creators transforming the catchy lyrics into a dance challenge. And it's certainly caught on, with videos against this backing track producing 825m video views.
Conkarah and Shaggy's track, 'Banana' (767m video views), comes second. It's had a new lease of life on TikTok with the #BananaDropChallenge, with TikTokers dropping sunglasses down from the top of their head all the way to their noses, all whilst dancing to this infectious bop.
Next up are Puri's 'Coño' (766m video views) and Natalie Taylor's Surrender (672m video views) - songs that have seen a massive revival this summer and could not be more different. While the popularity of the top three songs have been driven by fun, light-hearted dance challenges, creators used 'Surrender' in many original ways - from capturing heartwarming family moments through to incredible acts of kindness in a pandemic.
Number 5 and 6 on the list show that the party can keep on going with or without the Ibiza summer season, with KBFR's 'Hood Baby' (657m video views) and StaySolidRocky's 'Party Girl' (610m video views) proving to be hugely popular on TikTok. With its big bass drop and catchy hook, this modern homage to 'Girls Just Want To Have Fun' continues to rumble on as one of the most popular tracks on the platform.
Monte Booker & Smino's collaboration on 'Kolors' (593m video views) follows, experiencing a massive resurgence on TikTok. Megan Thee Stallion's 'Savage' (570m video views) comes in 8th, continuing its huge popularity through the summer.
The penultimate track on TikTok's list - Laxed (Siren Beat) from New Zealand-born, Joshua Nanai, who goes by the name Jawsh 685, sparked a viral dance craze, with users around the world dancing to the song and shouting out their own culture.
To round out the list, Haha (519m video views) from young emerging rapper, Lil Darkie, has risen to fame on TikTok, with beauty creators using the song as a backing track for scary and surprising make-up transformations.
This year's breakout track of the summer on TikTok was Harry Styles with 'Watermelon Sugar', seeing a 1,400% increase in video views week-on-week since the beginning of the summer - purely driven by the TikTok community's love of watermelons.
Hip-Hop / Rap was the most popular music genre for content creation, with 23 million creations over the summer period. Pop and Dance/Electronic music follows with 10 million and 3 million creations respectively. Reggae has also been hugely popular, with more than 2 million creations over the summer.
Paul Hourican, Head of UK Music Operations, TikTok: "Our songs of the summer show that almost any kind of genre can take off on TikTok - from Natalie Taylor's heartfelt 'Surrender' to the big bass drops from StaySolidRocky's 'Party Girl'. It's also fantastic to see how many emerging artists are breaking through on TikTok, using the power of our community to energise their songs in new and unpredictable ways."
