Sea Shanties Shore Up Big Streams on Spotify
19 January 2021 - Press releaseSpotify crunched the numbers, and, no surprise, shanties are having a certified, swashbuckling moment. Here’s what we found:
- Over 12,000 new user-generated playlists have been added since Dec. 23, 2020 that include “sea shanty” or “sea shanties” in the title.
- “Sea shanty” searches on Spotify were up by more than 630% this week (Jan. 13, 2021) from just a few weeks before (Dec. 23, 2020).
- “Wellerman” by The Longest Johns (featured in Evan’s viral video) has been the top-added global track to “sea shanty” playlists since Dec. 23, 2020.
Between Dec. 23, 2020 - Jan. 13, 2021, as compared to the same period last year, the following sailor songs have seen major increases
- “Wellerman” by The Longest Johns has seen more than a 7,000% increase in streams.
- “Leave her Johnny” by Michiel Schrey, Nils Brown, Sean Dagher has seen more than a225%+ increase in streams.
- “The Scotsman” by Hair of the Dog has seen more than a 140% increase in streams.
- “Drunken Sailor” by The Irish Rovers has seen more than a 80% increase in streams.
