Åsa Carild, former CEO of Polaris Hub, joins Utopia Music

Utopia Music has announced the appointment of Åsa Carild as Head of Platform. Located in Stockholm, she reports to Utopia Chief Data Officer Paul Gathercole.

Carild will be heading the Utopia platform unit that provides consumption analytics and economics data for the company’s service offering. She has previously set up and worked with several online licensing hubs, including ICE — the international collaboration between GEMA, STIM and PRS — and most recently was CEO at the Nordic licensing hub Polaris. She also worked as Manager Nordics for Nokia’s music venture, ran her own record label and spent nearly four years as COO for game tech company MuchDifferent. Carild has a background in academia and authored an extensive study about the impact of digitalization on the music business. She started her career in the music industry as a singer and is still active as a singer and songwriter.

Carild said: “As a songwriter and singer, I’ve seen the music industry problems first-hand that really need to be fixed. Utopia is all about helping the business by creating and spearheading technologies that improve trust and efficiency. It is exciting to join this group of technology and music professionals on a joint mission to achieve Fair Pay For Every Play. I’m particularly excited to be using my years of experience in music licensing and copyrights to address and solve the biggest problems in the business in order to make a lasting difference for Creators around the world.“

Utopia CEO Markku Mäkeläinen said: “Åsa strengthens Utopia’s already strong lineup of music professionals and cutting-edge technologists. With her stellar background and vast experience in licensing, especially in the collection society space, she is an absolutely perfect fit for our team! It was really difficult to find the right person for this multi-faceted, high-intensity role as we did not want to compromise on what we deem an absolutely key position for our continued growth and success. We are proud to be able to create solutions for the music industry’s short and long term needs.”

Carild joins a growing team of more than 100 Utopia employees in offices located in Zug, London, Helsinki and Stockholm. Other recently announced hires include respected British executive Roberto Neri as Chief Operating Officer and Amazon and Universal alumni Paul Gathercole as Chief Data Officer.
