One Night Records today announces Kerri McLean as director of Lockdown Town, the UK's first socially distanced immersive live music event, opening in London Bridge on October 2 [08.09]. The award-winning Birmingham-born director and actress, known for her ground-breaking portrayal of strong-willed former slave Kitty Despard in Poldark, will be taking the One Night Records audience on a powerful musical journey.
Kerri McLean said: "I'm thrilled to be leading on 'Lockdown Town'. Four months ago, I couldn't have imagined we'd have pulled this off, but now it feels like a real and much needed opportunity to put on a great show for our audiences whilst providing a lifeline to a range of talented artists. Our industry, like so many, has taken an extraordinary hit this year. 'Lockdown Town' feels like a unique chance for the arts, that I really hope helps to bolster the creative industry. I can't wait to have a boogie woogie!"
Described as "secret cinema for music", One Night Records spans five unique and spellbinding musical worlds within its 30,000 square feet maze of tunnels. Lockdown Town begins with Rock & Roll in the 1950s and travels back in time with some of the UK's best musicians leading audiences on a whirlwind journey through Jazz, Swing, Blues and Folk. Guests will travel through and experience five different immersive vaults, each dedicated to a different musical style and era, enjoying five exceptional concerts as never before, alongside themed food and drink, all rolled into one evening.
Artists confirmed to be joining the rotating roster of musicians include internationally acclaimed trio Kitty, Daisy & Lewis; Simeon Hammond Dallas, singer-songwriter from London's Camden Town; Winnie Ama and her soft, soulful vocals; sultry-soul artist Miss Baby Sol; upcoming vocalist Tamara Tare and many more. Across its run, Lockdown Town will give the stage to more than 300 musicians.
Lockdown Town is more than just great entertainment and fantastic music, it holds resonance and reflection at the core of the show. As Kerri explains: "Following 2020, 'Lockdown Town' feels like an apt artistic response; Coronavirus affected each and every one of us in such a direct and personalised way, and strangely, brought us closer together through that shared experience. Paradoxically, it shone a stark light on the inequalities in our society. Injustice and racism are long lasting problems that have been fought for generations, and this year has sparked a global response. 'Lockdown Town' looks at a lot of music born from the black experience in a segregated society and whilst it may not be comfortable for some, it's important to tackle some of the injustices and have those conversations. 'Lockdown Town' does that in its own way. If we don't talk about it and remember the past, how as a society can we move forward to make a better future?"
One Night Records will open its doors on October 2 as the UK's first socially distanced immersive live music venue. The venue will provide a safe environment to spend a night out enjoying live music, food and drinks with up to four family members or friends. Social distancing measures have been cleverly designed to be part of the evening and unnoticeable to guests, so they can fully immerse themselves in the experience and live music. Additionally, One Night Records have also partnered with FREE NOW, Europe's No.1 taxi app, to give guests the chance to choose the most Covid-safe way to travel to and from the venue with specially discounted rides.
FREE NOW comments: "FREE NOW is excited to be supporting One Night Records and the music industry by offering discounted rides to help people get to and from the event safely after so long."
A specially designed food and drinks menu is available, created by legendary chef Martin H Shaw to enhance the musical experience. From the gin-infusedMilk Punch cocktail originally served in 1920's Cotton Club in Harlem, Whiskey-based Ward 8 originating in 1898 Boston to the 1940's Hurricane cocktail from New Orleans, an exciting range of authentic cocktails are served alongside partners Orbit Beers, and Hennessy complementing the menu. Guests are also encouraged to dress up for their favourite decade to make for an even more profound immersive experience.
Robbie Sykes at Orbit Beers says: "Music is at the heart of Orbit Beers, from vinyl records to live shows, good time vibes! We can't wait to help bring electrifying live sets and rip-roaring good times back to life in London with One Night Records' 'Lockdown Town'!"
Hennessy comments: ''Music is a huge part of Hennessy's DNA. Supporting the trade and unsigned musicians in the UK has been a core focus for the brand during COVID-19, so it is only right that we partner with One Night Records for this flagship event in bringing live music back to London.''
One Night Records supports the Abram Wilson Foundation with a £2 contribution per ticket going to the charity for every single booking. Proceeds will help them achieve their mission of supporting the next generation of musicians to fulfil their potential and pay it forward to young people who face barriers to accessing inspirational music education opportunities.
