London Grammar Partners with Calm on Exclusive Meditative Mixes

  • Reinterprets three tracks from new UK #1 album as 15, 30 and 60 minute meditation soundtracks, available exclusively on Calm
  • Continues London Grammar’s foray into mood-based music, following curated ‘Moodmix’ playlist in 2018
  • Partnership facilitated by Sony Music UK’s creative & strategy hub, 4th Floor Creative, in collaboration with Ministry of Sound Records

Double Platinum, four-time BRIT nominees London Grammar and Calm, the leading mental wellness brand, have teamed up to create three meditative mixes, reimagining tracks from their brand new, chart-topping third album ‘Californian Soil’, available exclusively on Calm from Thursday, April 29, 2021 at 10:00am BST.

The group’s mellow remixes of tracks ‘All My Love,’ ‘Californian Soil’ and ‘Lord It’s A Feeling’ clock in at 15, 30 and 60 minutes respectively. This allows listeners to select the length of time they’d like to meditate or rest for and be matched with the appropriate mix.

The partnership with Calm sees the band further explore how artists can tap into the functional music trend, the popularity of which has surged in line with the rise of modern streaming culture and its focus on mood and activity-based playlists.  The project is London Grammar’s second foray into mood-based music, having created a ‘Moodmix’ playlist in 2018, which they specially curated to soundtrack the listener’s mood.

As personal fans of Calm, London Grammar guitarist Dan Rothman explained: “I was always a bad sleeper when I was young. I was scared of the dark, and constantly had nightmares. My anxiety around sleep lasted until my mid 20s. When I learnt about meditation and mindfulness it really helped me understand sleep and how to deal with those difficult moments when it evades me.”

Keyboardist and drummer Dot Major also added ”I’ve been a perennial sufferer of sleepless nights since I can remember. As a child I would listen to Chopin and later on Thomas Newman to help me sleep. There was always a song in ‘Road to Perdition’ by Thomas Newman that would wake me up abruptly and as it was before the days of playlisting I would suffer the same fate often. Here is something to help you sleep, I’ve made sure there’s nothing jarring in there. Just cyclical rhythms and harmony that hopefully appeals to your senses in the most soporific way.”

The partnership was facilitated by Sony Music UK’s creative & strategy hub — 4th Floor Creative – in collaboration with Ministry of Sound Records.

Dorothy Hui, SVP, Digital & Audience Development for Sony Music UK’s 4th Floor Creative, commented: “Music has the incredible power to influence how we feel  — through both body and mind. London Grammar’s meditative mixes for Calm offer a new way for audiences to experience songs from Californian Soil as a relaxation aid. As we strive to help our artists align their music with different moments in fans’ lives. This mood-based approach will continue to provide fresh ground for artists to experiment with their sound and engage their audiences in additional ways.”

Courtney Phillips, Head of Calm Music, said: “Our users are continuously looking for music to help relax, unwind and focus, so it felt completely natural to collaborate with London Grammar on remixes from their new album. We really pushed the boundaries to create long, winding tracks that create space to find stillness, and we can’t wait to hear what our listeners think.”

Through Calm Music, artists are given the opportunity to collaboratively and creatively showcase their artistry and create music that helps listeners sleep better, relax easier and focus stronger. California Soil meditative mixes are now available exclusively on Calm and joins other original sleep, mindfulness and music content.
