Eurosonic Noorderslag Returns in Digital Form for 202109 January 2021 - Editorial
Next week marks the start of the annual festival and music conference Eurosonic Noorderslag with a line-up featuring Norwegian act Sassy 009 and Rimon from the Netherlands*, both of whom have also been nominated in the Music Moves Europe Talent Awards.
The non-profit event, running from 13th to 16th January, is the key exchange for emerging European music talent, with a proven track record of helping to break new acts on the international music scene. It comprises two distinct parts: Eurosonic and Noorderslag. Eurosonic offers European acts a platform to perform to industry execs and fans from Wednesday to Friday, while Noorderslag presents the best Dutch music and takes place on the Saturday.
Previous artists showcased by ESNS include Fontaines DC, Celeste, Christine and the Queens, Stromae, Dua Lipa and IDLES. In 2013 Irish band Kodaline described the event as “one of the best ways to get your music to the right ears."
Last year the event sold out, attracting over 4000 delegates and 40 000 visitors total. 2021 will see the event take place entirely online for the first time ever.
Live streaming a festival brings with it a host of unique challenges, but ESNS organisers are committed to providing a valuable experience to participants and fans.
“Promoting new European talent has always been at the heart of Eurosonic,” says Robert Meijerink, ESNS Head of Programme. “Although the performances will have to be digital only this year we are dedicated to getting the acts in front of the right people to further their careers and giving them the kick start to their careers that they deserve.”
British artists featured this year include Jockstrap, Brìghde Chaimbaul, The Cool Greenhouse, The Goa Express, Adwaith and BBC Introducing artist Lava La Rue. All sets will be streamed for free on the ESNS website.
The conference - entitled “The Road To Recovery” - will include panel discussions, keynotes, speed meetings, award ceremonies and networking opportunities. Speakers include Aly Gillan (Bandcamp), Anita Barisic (Warner Chappell), Claire O’Neill (A Greener Festival), Helen Sildna (Tallinn Music Week), Keith Harris (Keith Harris Music), Michael Chugg (Michael Chugg Entertainment), Michal Kascak (Pohoda Festival), Sammy Andrews (Deviate Digital), Scott Cohen (Warner Music), Steve Strange (X-Ray Touring), Wilbert Mutsaers and Laura Kiesow (Spotify) and Tom Windish (Paradigm Talent Agency). We’re particularly looking forward to the keynote conversation between legendary promoter Scumeck Sabottka and agent Emma Banks of CAA on the topic of ticket touting. Registration costs €50; more information is on the ESNS website.
