EMI Records becomes first label to score five albums in the Top 10 Official Album's Chart this decade
05 September 2020 - Press release
Today, EMI Records becomes the first label this decade to score five albums from multiple artists in the Top 10 of the Official Album's Charts in the same week. The feat comes as EMI's parent company Universal Music UK achieves nine albums in the Top 10 - the first time a corporate group has had nine out of the Top 10 albums since modern Official Charts Company records began in 1994.
EMI's Top 10 albums this week come from British superstar Lewis Capaldi, rock titans Metallica and U.S global superstars Katy Perry, Taylor Swift and The Killers.
The success comes in the week Capaldi's debut album Divinely Inspired To A Hellish Extent hits the impressive milestone of one million UK sales and is now placed as the 7th longest running artist album for consecutive weeks in the official Top 10, having been a Top 10 album for all 68 weeks since its release.
Metallica score their sixth Top 10 record with live album S&M2, the band become one of only few acts to chart so highly with a live album in the past 20 years. Katy Perry's fifth album, Smile marks her third UK top five record and No.1 charting records by both The Killers Imploding The Mirage and Taylor Swift's Folklore continue to occupy the Top 10 following their release in August.
This accumulation of chart success kicks off a fresh new chapter for the powerhouse label under the new leadership of EMI President, Rebecca Allen, "The team at EMI are best in class, and the chart result today reflects their ambition and determination to create success for the artists they represent. I am so proud to be part of this incredible team and want to congratulate them all for their hard work and innovation during these exceptional times."
In June, the market leading company was renamed EMI Records marking a rebirth for the No.1 renowned British record label.
It's only the fourth time in the past 10 years that a label has achieved five albums in the Top 10. The last time was on 14th June 2019 when the same EMI Records team scored five albums in the Top 10 led by Lewis Capaldi's Divinely Inspired To A Hellish Extent then holding its fourth consecutive week at No.1.
