London, 20 April 2018: Live music ticketing discovery app DICE has today announced that the annual Girls Music Day will return on Saturday 28 April boasting some of the most successful female names in the industry, including host Jen Long, DJ and BBC Radio 1 presenter Abbie McCarthy and Mercury nominated band The Big Moon.
Now in its fourth year, the event aims to empower young women to strive for music careers in a male-dominated industry through a series of hands-on workshops and panel discussions.
Launched in 2016 to promote gender equality within the UK music scene, DICE’s one-day event aims to encourage 16 to 24 year olds identifying wholly or partially as a woman or non-binary person to get involved on stage and behind the scenes. Previous speakers include Laura Marling, Rae Morris and Jamz Supernova while this year will see a group of women with diverse backgrounds in music lead the charge.
A recent study revealed that only 16% of chart-topping artists over the past six years were women, and behind the scenes, the ratio of male producers to female producers is 49 to 1.
To tackle this disparity, the event will feature talks, Q&As, three specialist workshops and a discussion panel which brings together four women from London music x tech companies into conversation on the changing ways the industries intersect. Alison Donald (Kobalt), Lizzie Dickson (Youtube), and widely read music editor Leonie Cooper.
Workshop Detail
Future songwriters can gain an insight into writing hit songs with Jess Sharman (SheWrites). A Q&A approaching lyrics and melodies and finding inspiration for your music. Followed by a live demo clinic from Abbie Mccarthy (BBC Introducing, Radio 1 DJ). Bring your own song for actionable feedback.
The workshop is perfect for anyone looking to land their first job or internship. Noisey’s UK editor Tshepo Mokoena runs this alongside Amy Frenchum (Future Bubblers) and Lauren Evett (DEF).
K Minor and Katie Tavini (Normal Not Novelty) present a workshop that takes in all aspects of production. From the differences between engineering to mastering, to tips on how to produce your own tracks. Future producers want to sign up to this.
DJ and host Jen Long said: “I’m excited to host Girls Music Day this year, especially with it being such a momentous year of women fighting to be heard. In 2018, the lack of female figures within our industry is shocking, especially with the discouraging gender diversity in this year’s festivals. The main purpose is to engage and inspire the young people attending to work in music, to help them develop their career plans, and to bring up the next generation who will help push for equality in the industry. We’ve got an astonishing collection of speakers this year all offering great advice on that first stepping-stone into music. We’d urge all girls to get involved”.
All sessions are free and open to anyone aged 16 to 24 years old, who identifies wholly or partially as a woman or non-binary person. Apply online at http://dice.fm/girls-music-day.
