London, November 27th 2008 – The Guardian Media Group and Word magazine were among the big winners at the fifth annual Record of The Day Awards for Music Journalism and PR, which took place last night at Conway Hall, Holborn, central London.
Caspar Llewellyn-Smith won the ‘Editor of The Year’ award (Observer Music Monthly) for the second year running and Word Magazine was announced ‘Magazine of The Year,’ also for a second year in a row.
The Guardian Media Group scooped four of the top award categories – ‘Live Reviews Writer of The Year’, ‘Record Reviews Writer of The Year’, ‘Best Music Coverage in a National Newspaper’, and ‘Best Podcast’. All of these awards were won for the second year running by The Guardian.
Other notable winners included Dog Day Press who were awarded ‘Best Independent PR Company’ and Polydor Records who won the ‘Best In-House PR Department’ award.
Three ‘Outstanding Contribution’ Awards were also handed out at the ceremony with former Sounds journalist and acclaimed author Jon Savage receiving the ‘Outstanding Contribution to Music Journalism’ award, MBC PR co-founder Barbara Charone receiving the ‘Outstanding Contribution to Music PR’ award and legendary music photographer Pennie Smith receiving the ‘Outstanding Contribution for Music Photography’ award.
The Record of The Day Awards celebrate Music Journalism and Public Relations within the UK music business and were this year hosted by BBC Radio 2 DJ Janice Long.
