Scottish Album of the Year (SAY) Award
22 June 2016 - Press releaseTen Album Shortlist Revealed
The shortlist for the most coveted music prize in Scotland was unveiled on (Thursday 16th June).
The Scottish Album of the Year (SAY) Award announced the 10 albums which will make it through to the final during an exclusive live broadcast of BBC Radio Scotland’s The Quay Sessions. Previous SAY nominees Fatherson performed alongside last year's award winner Kathryn Joseph before this year’s shortlisted albums were announced live on air by host Vic Galloway. Amongst the shortlist this year are a number international collaborations: Ghanaian and South African performers and producers, LA based glam/art rock icons Sparks (who teamed up with Franz Ferdinand) and a project with 70s disco ensemble Sister Sledge.
This shortlist of 10 albums included internationally successful synthpop trio CHVRCHES from Glasgow, hotly tipped North London born, Edinburgh raised composer Anna Meredith and Auntie Flo (with an album featuring Ghanaian artist Anbuley and South African co-producer Esa Williams), 2015 Mercury Music Prize nominee C Duncan, previous winners (and Mercury Music prize 2014 winners for Dead) Young Fathers and Scottish and English folk ensemble Lau. Producer Graeme Clark also known as The Revenge, Chemikal Underground artist Emma Pollock and ex Beta Band member Steve Mason all also made it onto the shortlist.
FFS were the winner of the public vote. The public vote gave fans 72 hours (13th – 15th June) to cast their votes to have their favourite Scottish album included in the shortlist of 10. The remaining nine slots were chosen by an independent panel of judges (see Notes for Editors for full list of judges).
The process will culminate in a winning Scottish album picking up a £20,000 first prize while nine shortlisted titles will receive £1,000 each. Now in its fifth year, the award prize makes the SAY Award ceremony on Wednesday 29 June one of the most lucrative in UK music. For the first time, the SAY Award is being held at Paisley Town Hall to tie in with the Paisley bid for UK City of Culture 2021.
Run by the Scottish Music Industry Association (SMIA), previous SAY Award winners are Kathryn Joseph (2015), Young Fathers (2014), RM Hubbert (2013) and Bill Wells & Aidan Moffat (2012).
