Musictank Is Technology The New Beatles? line up

6.30pm, Tue 16th Sept. 2014, Fyvie Hall, University of Westminster, 309 Regent Street, W1B 2UW

  • Leading design innovation and music tech specialist Michela Magas and performance artist Gaynor O’Flynn complete line up!
  • Exciting debut - Innovation Arts to ‘live scribe’ the event

MusicTank today confirms final panelists for its innovative forthcoming event that will shed light on what new technology fused with music is bringing to the industry.

Music Tech Fest founder, Michela Magas is an innovation catalyst who bridges the worlds of science and art, design and technology, and academic research and industry, with a track record of 20 years of innovation, with a range of clients including Apple, AWAL, the FT, Virtual Music Stores, Microsoft and Nokia. She is also an EU Commission Advisor for its Digital Agenda for Europe (Horizon2020) programme.

Joining her is Performance Artist, Gaynor O’Flynn, who is currently working on interactive music, tech and performance works for Spitalfields Music Festival and Mehboob studios in Mumbai.  Her recent commission for The International Performance Festival in Istanbul involved her creating a work for voice and cello and creating circles of light with an EEG scanner from her brainwaves as she sang.

Presenting a range of companies working on next-generation technological and musical innovation, this event will consider the optimistic future of music from its creation, performance, distribution and consumption through to fan interaction and crowd experiences.  Based on these new, forward-thinking, mind-blowing examples, a panel discussion will explore what the future marriage of tech and music will look like - and what kind of children they might be expected to produce.

A first for MusicTank, Innovation Arts will ‘live-scribe’ this event, resulting in an annotated large-scale visualisation of the key discussion strands of the evening.

Presenting Companies:

ROLI - new musical instruments with a new philosophy

Immersive Album - a new content delivery format

Musion - 3D holographic projection

nu desine - a new paradigm in electronic music production

Sofar Sounds - curates secret, intimate gigs in unusual spaces

Discussion Panel:

Keith Harris - chair, MusicTank; Director of Performer affairs, PPL

Jeremy Silver - author (Digital Medievil), entrepreneur and digital consultant

Gerard Grech - CEO Tech City

Michela Magas - Founder Music Tech Fest and co-founder Stormatolite

Gaynor O’Flynn - Performance Artist and Founder, Beinghuman

Said MusicTank Chair, Keith Harris:
"A chance conversation with Kevin Godley, in which he came up with the phrase “technology is the new Beatles”, has led to the idea of exploring whether technology has the ability to inject the same kind of new vitality into a flagging record industry as The Beatles did to the business in the early sixties. We intend to explore the idea of whether the much maligned march of technology can in fact be the major industry driver over the next couple of years."
